Understanding Tatami

Tatami-gae (Repairing Tatami)

There are three main ways to repair tatami: Omote-gae (re-covering the Omote), Uragaeshi (turning over the Omote), and replacing individual tatami.
The best option depends on the condition of your tatami and how the room is used.
Once we understand the current state, we can recommend the most suitable approach.

Glossary

Filling (Toko):
the core/base of a tatami.
Surface (Omote) :
the woven top layer of a tatami.
Border (Heri) :
the fabric edge of a tatami.
Tatami-gae:
repairing tatami (either by reusing or replacing parts).

Note: From here on, this page uses the shorter forms Filling / Omote / Border.

New Tatami (Replacing the entire mat)

“New tatami” means replacing the entire mat. Because every room is slightly different, the space needs to be measured so the tatami fits neatly without gaps. Accurate measurements are essential.

When tatami has deep, obvious indentations or the Filling has lost its resilience (bounce), it is time to replace it. If tatami has been affected by termites, corrosion, mold, or mites, it cannot be repaired and needs to be replaced.

As a general guideline, the Filling may need replacement about every 20 years, depending on how the room is used and the environment.

Omote-gae (Re-covering)

In Omote-gae, the existing Omote is removed from the Filling and replaced with a new Omote.

If the Omote becomes heavily scuffed, worn through, or visibly warped, it should be replaced. Depending on the Omote grade and how often the room is used, re-covering is commonly recommended about five years after Uragaeshi. If the Filling itself is damaged, replacing the entire tatami is recommended.

Uragaeshi (Turning over)

Both sides of the Omote can be used. In Uragaeshi, we remove the existing Omote, flip it over, and reattach it to the same Filling with a new Border.

Uragaeshi is only possible when the visible surface is still in good condition. It is commonly done about 3–5 years after new tatami is installed.

* Please note that we can provide Uragaeshi (turning over) services only in Japan. We appreciate your understanding.
