Features of Tatami
for Removable Sunken Hearth

Features

This is a newly developed tatami mat exclusively designed for embedding Removable Sunken Hearths (okiro) into tatami floors.

[ Patent No. 7352968 ]

For those living in apartments or rental properties where traditional hearth installation is not possible or where expensive carpentry work is required, have you given up on incorporating a hearth in your tea room?

While recent electric and induction heating (IH) Removable Sunken Hearths make tea practice more easily, placing them directly on the tatami makes them difficult to use. Many people find it inconvenient, especially because the ladle (hishaku) cannot be placed on the tatami when it hits the hearth frame, leading to difficulty performing traditional tea ceremony movements.

Our newly developed tatami mat allows the tatami surface and the Removable Sunken Hearth frame to be level (flush). This enables you to perform the tea ceremony as if a traditional hearth had been installed.

With this special tatami mat, you can now hold authentic tea practices and gatherings at home, something you may have previously given up on.
