[Customer Testimonials]
I grew up in an attic in China and loved the intimacy with the sun, moon, stars and sky. After I moved to America, I always wanted to turn my attic into a living space.
After years of Ikebana and meditation practice, I eventually decided to remodel my new attic into two sections: an outer section for a zen room, and an inner section for a team room. For the inner peace and warm nature, I designed the inner space with a traditional Japanese shoin style, with tokonoma and tatami.
It was challenging because the inner section of the attic was very low. A regular person could barely walk in it. Yet I liked it because it reminded me of Rikyu’s tea room with humility.
After carefully examining the mailed samples, I chose Supreme Shinrabansho from Motoyama Tatami in Kyoto. Because the original antique-style rafters were shown, I paired it with a border of purple-brownish color Suou (蘇芳·すおう). I designed the floor tatami with a traditional auspicious tea room pattern and a hearth space carved in.
Due to the tight space and construction complexity, every tatami piece had a different width, length and depth. Even the hearth (ro) piece had a different depth than the surrounding centerpiece. Mayu san from the Motoyama Tatami shop assisted me with great professionalism, patience and a warm heart. I wouldn’t be able to complete my design without her dedicated support.
The final outcome is stunning. Everything worked out as planned. The tatami pieces are top quality with a graceful appearance and natural smell, which further enhances the serenity of the team room. The edge color matches the original roof rafter, the antique tokonoma posts, as well as the floor and wall finish, creating peace and harmony.
These days I spend most of my leisure time in the new attic space reading, drinking and meditating, where I feel extremely peaceful and content. My gratitude goes deeply into Motoyama san, who fulfilled my dream of reconnecting with a spiritual, peaceful and beautiful attic space. I would love to recommend Motoyama to anyone looking for authentic and traditional Japanese tatami, given their outstanding quality in their products, service and a caring heart.
